Just like Geralt, V has a pre-established name, a pre-established personality and pre-established friends and acquaintances. Sure you can make a few choices, but its just like how in Witcher 3 you can choose what you want Geralt to say or how you want him to react to a certain situations. Theres a degree of choice but it stays within the limits of Geralt/V's predetermined personality.
Your V has a pre-established canon first name (Vincent or Valerie) much like Geralt. Oh you wanted to roleplay that your V is a japanese girl who interned at Arasaka and eventually was assigned to the Night City division? Too bad, your name is Valerie fuck you.
Your V will always talk like a hoodrat street kid and will always have an impulsive and excited voice. Wanted to roleplay a cold, calculating corpo who speaks softly and with disdain? Too bad, fuck you! You will say "aw fuck this piss is shit fuck fuck gonk ass" and you will like it!
Your V will always be a moralfag. Want to be a "the end justifies the means" sociopath who doesnt care about the suffering of others? Too bad, fuck you! V will whine and cry about every prostitute who gets slapped by her boyfriend.
Want to play a V in control of his emotions? Too bad, fuck you! V will freak out and go "Woah! holy shit!" at anything that happens to him (e.g Delamain ramming his car, etc).
V is not your character. You only think that because they named him/her with a single letter. Replace the letter V with "Bob" for every dialogue in the game and suddenly you realize its not a blank slate its a very defined and very specific character.
