Yes, he's a lifelong martial artist so he enjoys the high level exchanges. But he had a goal in mind too, these aren't contradictory. If he could dodge Freeza, he would have done so.

This is completely different from the base fight, at that point it's far more mean spirited and personal, the "fighting the strongest guy ever" aspect of it was far less pronounced.
