This is a really good point. Harland does have random absurd humor, but it's also a way to check the egos of the guest. It outlines whether that person is someone worth having a genuine moment with some tool that is trying desperately to be taken serious at all times. Harland may not be the greatest comedian, but that old dog has alot of wit and experience much of which Sam does not.
