You could argue he doesn't, but he listened to her pain and later confronted Sawyer about how he treats the toys, when he drops the act he says makes it clear he doesn't want to do what he's doing, just that she's forced his hand. He even says "it's time to come home" which suggests he has some special treatment for her.
