It makes infinite times more sense, and is so much cooler, but it doesn't give us the visual of Knuckles standing there in-place at the altar day in and day out, unmoving.
But even then, that is trying too hard to convey an idea in such a way that it destroys itself conceptually. Yes, Knuckles is "the mountain" to represent that he is immovable in his responsibility to protect the Master Emerald and Angel Island. But this whole idea of having the M.E. just sitting there on the altar out in the open makes it TOO literal. Knuckles is supposed to patrol the ENTIRE Island, and have the limited freedom to at least explore his home and hunt for treasure and other ancient artifacts. Forcing him to literally stand in-place at this altar prevents him from even being able to actually live on or protect his island.
The Master Emerald itself should be in the Hidden Palace deep beneath Lava Reef, which is within Red Mountain, which is right there next to this open Emerald Altar in Sonic Adventure's adventure field. So instead, this altar should be something more like a potential gateway or shortcut or key or SOMETHING that can lead to the Hidden Palace. Which can necessitate Knuckles stand there and watch over it, but not SO critical that he must be here specifically 24/7 since the real thing is deep underground.
Overall, Knuckles is supposed to be the Guardian of Angel Island as a whole. THAT is what makes him "The Mountain", forever stuck in this one place. The "Mountains" of Angel Island. Watching over the whole island to make sure that no invader can find their way to the Hidden Palace.
