On my ride this morning I passed a young man, maybe 18 or 20, going up a climb. As I went by and said hi he turned to me and went "Yes sir, good morning sir" with a slight bow of his head. I found that amusing as lately I've noticed clerks and such calling me sir instead of bro. Anyways this rider reminded me of my younger self, in the first summer or two I was riding. Loose basic jersey, no bike glasses; at that age I managed to save myself a bit by careful reading of The Rules, unfortunately it looked like this young man hadn't found such guidance on instagram or whatever. Anyways I moved past him up the climb and eased off after getting a gap of a bikelength or two. In my early years, if a rider passed me I would have dug deep to try and hold their wheel. This young man had no such hunger. Kids these days.
