As it currently is, the comics industry is not structured to produce good enough comics.

They hire a writer to write a story that fits what they're looking for, and then hire an artist to draw it.
This division of labour is completely incapable of producing anything good enough to capture the attention of readers.

Consider again Scott Pilgrim. It is not a story that a publisher could brainstorm, but only a writer, because it is deeply personal to the writer.
And it is not a story that a hired artist could draw because the art plays an essential role in the story telling, only the writer can do the art.
There is no room for any division of labour here. Any changes in the writers or artists would completely sink the entire comic and it wouldn't sell a single copy.

We live in an era where the demands of entertainment are higher than they've ever been and only the work of a sole individual vision can meet this demand.
Comics must become independent projects, original in their entirety.
