Yeah, what the other anon said, but it work by reducing tiny variations on color swatches to a numbered code. Especially in print, So printers can exactly match inks or paint colors for the same reproduction every time. The thing is, Pantone itself doesn't really make anything, they just came up with a system and charge thousands to people to access/use it as "industry standard." Like copyrighting smell mixture formulas, or a company food recipe, like a cola flavor mix, or a Krabby Patty, in a book.
They sometime add names, but only as a joke/honor/homage. "Jim's cat brown" for examples.
