Once, systems-oriented autists wanted to create games with mechanics inspired by genre fiction. Now it's genre fiction that copypastes those crunchy systems, and not even forefathers of the genre, in complete disregard of the very term FANTASY. It's all fireballs and skills that were most relevant in videogames, since combat is what games focus on most. As if action alone is what makes writing engaging. For all the technical improvements, "problem solving" is still largely limited to combat and explicit dialogue checks.
I don't think "fantasy video game writing" ever got any better than Arx Fatalis, in the pulpy fantasy adventure sense anyway.
