I do think 90% of VI's character story is on the cutting room floor due to cartridge space limitations, yes. However 1994 Square was a master of implication, so you can piece a lot of it together yourself (which is good, it gives player engagement to the story.) and because of the limitations you can infer, that whatever remained of the character aspects (especially if they make two appearances) are extremely central to their arcs and personality, because they weren't cut. Thus every character moment has gravitas and there's zero wasted moments. The other accidental resulting quality from this, which makes VI's story a masterpiece, is that this snap writing is extremely beneficial to pacing of the story as well (Not V tier, but nothing will ever reach that again).
So, while, yes, I've always dreamt of a remake of VI, where we could actually see all the characters with nuanced and fleshed out backstories, present actions, mindsets and spoken lines (especially Terra having a psychological dissection like her genderbent version in VII got would push her above him for me), I already know that it will harm the pacing, so it can't ever surpass VI as is in quality. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to make that sacrifice for my personal fanservice at the detriment of others. I can deal with the story turning glacial for it. I would like it, but objectively it would be bad.
All of the above is inevitable in ideal conditions by the way. Square-Enix will not be ideal and I will be mad. Yet still I actually want them to rape VI with a Remake unlike me opposing every single other Remake. VI has that hold over me.
