I'm sure in the beginning this was just a low effort approach to panelling, but at some point it became a thought provoking, artistic panelling composition.
It's the panelling equivelant of a Kubrick shot.
Whenever the gutter of one panel lines up with the gutter of another panel, it creates a noticeable tangent, a bold white line going through the page. It draws attention to the panelling and thus away from the story.
And the 9 grid is perhaps the mathematically highest number of tangents possible, thereby drawing the most attention to it.
