Cordwainer Smith (aka Paul Linebarger) is the great American science fiction writer, mainly connected short stories spanning millennia. Scanners Live In Vain, The Lady Who Sailed The Soul, A Game of Rat and Dragon, the list goes on and on. Just so much more interesting really and so much more beautifully written than anything the "big three" could ever manage too. And yes, Rick Priestley did nick some ideas about the imperium of man, the horrors lurking in the "up and out" and so on. Also it has catgirl escorts in it later in the timeline ("The Ballad of Lost C'Mell" which despite how it sounds its actually beautiful).
In his non-fiction career he (literally) wrote the book on psychological warfare for the CIA ("Psychological Warfare" by Paul M. A. Linebarger).
