Well, Octopath 2 has a system where the character Hikari can duel NPCs to learn their moves
And it also has a system where you can beat up NPCs to take an item from them.

So the main difference would be one game has a positional grid based combat system and one doesn't.
But even without positioning, Octopath manages to have more strategy in fights than Wandering Sword.
I would actually say Wandering Sword's strength over Octopath is the story and not any of the gameplay stuff
