Several ex-Bungie devs also talked about this. Marcus Letho said when Bungie grew and started Project Tiger (Destiny) one of the reasons he quit is that as you recruit new, and especially many younger people, it creates "social fiefdoms" and he increaseingly felt like cliques formed inside the company. And you can tell. Just see any interview with Luke Smith where he can't stop talking about how Destiny's Producer, Mark Noseworthy, is "his best friend" and the two always visited each other's families and dadded out together.
Obviously such things should happen, but given that both kind of became complacent "top dogs" at Bungie in the Destiny era, and basically made themselves untouchable until they quit recently, it shows kind of what happens to a lot of companies. People who really shouldn't be there, end up at the top.

And Luke Smith had no pedigree in game dev. He wrote rage-blogging about Halo 2 having shitty balancing and got a gig at 1up and Kotaku, after which he rubbed some elbows and ended up making Investment math for Halo Reach (which he by his own admission screwed up) and then he became Design Director of Destiny after making the rest of Bungie turn against Joseph Staten, who was the Story Guy for Halo and early Destiny development, simply because Luke was "cooler to be around".
