TL:DR Mhiggers invade Gridania over clay. Gridania has a good general initially and is winning at first (IIRC) but he gets replaced with a toady of the Hearer Council who causes a massive military disaster. Fears that the increasingly aggressive Ala Mhigo might try to take the whole thing and drive the Elementals into a genocidal fury and/or distract them from their war against the dragons prompts Ishgardian advisors to lend a hand and while Ala Mhigo goes "oh, knights, let's organize and plan around fighting cavalry" the combined Ishgardian and Gridanian forces instead lure the Mhigger pikemen into the trees where they get Vietnamed by Gridanian archers. Gridania wins, relations with Ishgard are strengthened, and Ala Mhigo shows the first signs of the instability that will lead to the Mad King.
