I saw a guy somewhere, and thought I had pics of it, who was tired of the little plastic stems snapping off his BFG battleships (unlike the little plastic cruisers, the bigger ones are mostly metal), so he machined aluminum replacements.

Mine are all still plastic, even on the battleships.
