All my old Citadel cases are made for 25mm bases, although I know I could get some custom 32mm inserts for not a whole lot of money... but then where would I keep my 25mm guys?

I bought some inexpensive pluck foam from Amazon like >>95948762 describes and used it to line a pair of Indomitus boxes with cells large enough to transport 32mm, 40mm, or even the odd 50mm model (Lord-Commander Dante, as tall as he is, still fits!). This works well as long as I keep the boxes upright.

The Amazon pluck foam comes compressed down into vacuum-packed packages , and a lot of buyers left negative reviews because of that. The trick is to take the foam out of the wrap, soak it with water, and then let it dry out for a few days; then it will expand to the size shown in the photographs.

I magnetized my models with riveting a cheap bake tray onto the bottom of a storage container, since the type of magnetic sheets Saint Duncan uses in his video weren't reasonably accessible to me. But it's not going to be great for any distant travel. A wide and also tall enough biscuit tin can work too, but what's the scope of your army?

>Are there any tricks to make sure the holes are aligned?
It doesn't work for every situation, but I normally drill the hole in one side, insert a tiny pin, and then apply a drop of red paint to the end of the pin. When you touch the two parts together - presumably in the way they would fit "for real" - the paint on the end of the exposed pin will leave a tiny red mark on the other piece. That's where you drill your matching hole.

How much of black tint? Sounds to me you just want very dark green, so in that case I'd just basecoat black, then do like 3 coats of increasingly green black in such a way that each one covers less and less, going towards the edge, so maybe 75-50-25% coverage for each transition, finishing up with an emerald edge highlight

I've returned. Last time I posted I had just started finishing models for the first time. Now I've finished 40 or so of my warriors and I'm on to my heroes and cavalry.

Mostly finished the Gil-Galad model I got for free. Hair still needs some layering and highlighting but I'm missing the next paint I need to do that.

Not too happy with it overall. Just don't think the scheme I went for looks good for him. Went with the color scheme similar to the movie but with silver instead of gold. Blonde hair as well as canonically he likely had blonde hair.

He's too drab, which is fine for my warriors (and what I was going for) but I wanted him to stand out more than he currently does. Gil-Galad is was specifically known to have extremely shiny armor.

for oil washes it's (probably) gonna be fine, cheaper oil paints usually have less pigment and more binder and the pigment itself is less finely ground, which might (but also might not) result in the oil wash separating and becoming grainy as it dries

I have liquitex white ink, which I like, but I prefer ammo atom satin white with a bit of their thinner for zenithal, it atomises better than the ink giving smoother blends. I find ink can get a bit spattery, and you have to build it up super slow so it doesn't get too wet and run into gaps.

White ink is super useful though for pin washing plasma guns and other glowy shit though, so should definitely be on your rack.

Inks have a lot of pigment while still being translucent, so they are great for making your colours really vibrant while keeping your transitions. Never used contrasts, but they look pretty weak and more for quickly painting a model that's already in greyscale. So 2 different uses. I would never just paint a model in inks, I only use them to bring out more colour.

1) proper white contrast paint doesn't exist
2) ink is just transparent paint with similar properties to regular paint, contrasts/speedpaints vary in the way they go on a mini from brand to brand and even from paint to paint within a brand

Because they're not the same and aren't used the same.

White ink is opaque, it's like very thin, very strong white paint. The closest contrast to white is probably apothecary white, but that's a grey designed to tint and shade a white base coat.

Contrast style paints are designed to lightly tint exposed surfaces and give a deeper, darker colour to recesses, inks are designed to give maximum tint to whatever they touch without looking different in recesses. There are some contrast paints, like IF yellow & baal red that act more like inks than contrast.

I enjoy Vallejo model air silver (the golds in the range are fucking dreadful), scale 75 thrash metal for dark silver (and decayed metal is a must have base coat for any bronzecoppergold) and speed metal from them is great to mix in for brighter metallic highlights.

Lots of people like Vallejo metal colour, but I think it sucks, it splits almost instantly, doesn't mix with other paints, layers horribly and is far too thin straight out of the bottle.

GW actually do a lot of really interesting metallics in the goldscopperronzes, and they're perfectly cromulent, warlock bronze is always on my rack.

>>95956577
I don't like metallic inks, too runny and they tend to be formulations where the metal flake sits on the surface and can be rubbed off too easily, and they'll run into crevices giving you bright recesses. The only exception is molotow chrome refill ink, because that can give super bright and shiny final highlights, or through an airbrush over a glossy black base will give a true reflective chrome finish.

Citadel. Specifically Leadbelcher and Retributor Armour (which are usually pretty alright if I just add a tiny bit of water and cover in 2-3 coats) and Auric Armor. Auric seems to bee an incredibly weak paint though. When I mix it I can frequently see the white of the acryllic medium in it and when I try to later or drybrish over Retributor I can't even see a difference it's so weak.
At least Balthasar and Stormhost Silver are generally pretty good when I use them.

You may have executed already, but if not: the real trick is to drill yours holes slightly larger than your rod.

If you do that there will be literal wiggle room when you're gluing the pieces together, and you can get a perfect fit.

The join will still be strong, as long as you don't giga-oversize the holes and get yo hotdog in a hallwayland.

But i'm being very nitpicky.

I feel that it could do with some sort of volumetric highlight gradient, to make the top turret grab attenetion more and give the eye a better journey through the model, but the infantry might override the need to do that.

How do I stop relying on washes to shade areas? Iโ€™m trying to stop using them in everything I paint. Granted I layer over everything afterward washing but I feel like the transitions would be smoother if I hade more control over the shadow. What are the best deep shade colors for things like yellow or warm browns or green skins? I like washes but i want to try out NOT using them and see how I like it.

Also, whatโ€™s a better alternative for averland sunset? Averland sunset is fine, but there must be something a little less desaturated but still strong.

If you want to still keep using washes,Instead of washing full areas with shades, try to do more controlled washing just into recesses/darker areas. If you want to stop using them completely, then you need to focus more on bigger contrast with your layers and starting with a shade that is dark enough and then having enough layers of paint that you have the contrast from really dark to mid tones to highlights. If you want really smooth transitions between the colors on different volumes I'd probably consider either glazing or wet blending.

>How do I stop relying on washes to shade areas?
You just paint the shadows. Grab your mid tone and mix in a darker colour and paint that into areas that would be in shadow, which is usually recesses. Getting rid of washes lets you start putting light on your mini because you're no longer restricted to shadows only being in the recesses. It is a struggle though, you have to learn to understand how light works, and I still feel very far off that. It definitely is a good move to stop using washes if you want to improve though. Or at least stop using them for everything. They still have their place on some things. But quitting them forces you to learn shading, highlighting and honestly mixing paints a lot better as well.

I guess the easiest way is to base darker than you normally would, then work up to your highlights.
Pick a base color. Mix it 50/50 with a 'shade' color (like dark blue or purple), and use that as your starting point.

Trying to make Gothic army with Victrix Late Roman armored infantry but they all wear the Fred from Scooby-Doo neckerchief. I got a cape from GBP and bent it then used plastic cement to attach it to the figure, and coated the top with more plastic cement thinking it woild melt into place. Is the cape likely to un-bend and detach from the figures?

I usually do mine in the same color atm, but I want to change the guns to another color as a spot color, a little bit of vibrancy maybe.

I like the tidbit of lore that shows the tyranids weapons' being parasitic organisms that change the host, with the termagaunts' guns being the main brain of the gaunt after its fused, so drawing a little attention to them wouldn't hurt.

On a related note, I saw Vince venturella's video where he says he uses a red grey as a base coat/shadow for his off-whites. can anyone with experience attest to this? what are some good off-white boney colors or what can I paint under it for smooth and even coverage? I find offwhite takes lots of layer compared to other paints and I risk creating unwanted texture.

Cheapest is garbage with cardboard and sprue glued to it. A paper corrugator is great for dressing things up, and you can also cut strips of paper or light cardboard with a couple different cheap tools to hide joints, make shingles, etc. Check the Broheim site https://www.broheim.net/downloads.html for a lot of good articles about straight cardboard build
These guys https://www.maelstromsedge.com/medge/store.jsp have a selection of cheap plastic sprues that you can use to dress up boxes, chipboard, and plasticard to make much more interesting terrain. They also have a spectacular terrain-making blog. I use these a lot. There are also quite a few people on etsy and similar platforms selling windows, doors, et. al. to dress up plain kits
Trees, bamboo, and other basic modeling supplies are stupid-cheap on Aliexpress, whenever they get to you. Otherwise it's the aquarium store for you
TTCombat makes very cheap, decent-looking MDF kits that you can add more detail onto easily. In particular they've got a really nice container ship and some construction site stuff along with a ramshackle Western town. There are a number of other cheap MDF producers out there but it's a very local thing and hard to keep track of.

Above that is 3DP companies, "premium" MDF, and things like Mantic's (overpriced) boxes of plastic terrain. The Walking Dead terrain set is an oddly good deal, everything else not so much

>mats
I made two out of canvas, grit, and caulk. Pic related is my first. They only save about 20-30% over just buying a mouse-pad mat on sale, but they *are* about a third the weight and you can customize them heavily. I *highly* recommend you get a mouse-pad style over the vinyl ones, though, they hold the printing better (vinyl scratches more easily) and they don't constantly try to roll themselves back up. You can make decent-looking asphalt terrain tiles with "travertine" vinyl flooring and paint.

I bought this valkyrie second hand and it's missing this one window frame piece (as advertised). I can't oyumaru the opposite side since it's flipped and fabricating an exact copy out of plasticard sounds tedious and virtually impossible to make something not slightly off and annoying..
and I want to use it as an excuse to do something different. But idk if my idea of covering the pilots view with these "car window louvers" is even sensical enough to suspend your disbelief. I can't think of anything else to do

>Has anyone tried using gum arabic to thicken inks before? I can't find any other ways to try and bring them up to "speedpaint" consistency
I do it occasionally for calligraphy.
You do not want to do this for miniatures, trust me. Arabic makes the ink "sticky" and glossy. It clogs detail. It really weird drying properties, it tends to skin-up but leave the bottom liquid for a bit and reactivates if you flood a thin layer or let water pool on a previous application. It can badly fuck up your brushes if you don't keep them meticulously clean. And it doesn't really bind well to non-porous surfaces. IME it also doesn't play nice with some brands of acrylic ink, alcohols, and most shellac-based stuff (the last of which you shouldn't be using anyway, but you never know).
You're much better off using an acrylic medium or speedpaint medium to thicken your ink. The main use case for Arabic is as a binder when you're mixing your own dip pen inks with straight pigment and water. If you're going the dry pigment route with minis you really need to use an acrylic or oil binder, those adhere much better.

Looks like I forgot the basics of tank painting. Sorry anon.

>you could have used a rusty brown to give it more contrast
Maybe I should have used a brown wash instead.
Instead of the dark tone diluted with speedpaint medium I used.
It seemed to have reactivated the pro acryl dark silver paint and the wash was carrying the metallic properties.
That or I didn't give the metallic paints enough time to dry. or the big brush by miniature painter standards I used had bristles too stiff.

take pic related for example. the tank is brown-ish, and the tracks are grey/silver. But if the tank itself would be grey, it would look better if the tracks would be more brown-ish. Either rusty, or dusty.
If a tank is green, like a T-34 or Sherman usually, then both types of track colours can look equally good.

Airbrush bros,
I have a masters airbrush g233 and im still a noob after owning it for over a year. Lately its been spraying weakly and kind of stuttering (not sputtering, stuttering and โ€œcoughingโ€ out air)

When I sense a clog itโ€™s almost always a nozzle issue so I clean it with acetone and try to push my needle through it a few times but I know paint or varnish can still get stuck in the wider corners of the nozzle. The best I can do is try to stick some toothbrush bristles in there.

For what itโ€™s worth, I use Vallejo acrylic matte varnish and I usually donโ€™t have problems like this but I mention it in case some anons have had experience with it fucking up your parts. Also Iโ€™m using the big .05 or .5 (whichever the correct size is) needle
Can anyone recommend a tool to clean nozzles and fit through the mouth of the brush off aliexpress or something? Iโ€™m going to see if they have nozzles at the store today since theyโ€™re cheap and it could solve the issue just like that. I want to use my airbrush more but issues like this are why Iโ€™m hesitant to do anything but basecoat and varnish with it.

Pic unrelated

Have the same airbrush, 2/3 of the time its paint buildup inside of the nozzle where the needle comes in. Oiling your needle after cleaning helps, and making sure you take the nozzle 9ff to clean both sides. Adding flow improver and working in smaller batches of paint also help quite a bit.

I just recently started playing around with this. It's surprising how much I like it. Though some don't seem to work as well and there seems to be no rhyme or reason what colors work over certain metals I use. Sometimes it's a perfect tint. Sometimes it refuses to level and runs towards the books and crannies acting like an exaggerated wash.

The key to making it work well is a lot of experimenting with color combos and finding a right balance of watering down the contrast (or adding more contrast medium) so that it doesnโ€™t coffee stain but also gives a thin even coat. Youโ€™ll also want to load the brush with quite a bit of paint because is best to work with a lot of paint on the surface then use a dry brush to wick excess off before it starts drying. Thereโ€™s also the fact mistakes are a pain in the ass because its contrasts

It's pretty clean but it could use more depth. Bring up the highlights and deepen the shadows. The metallics especially seem a bit flat. The robes could also use some attention, the purple is kinda similar to the blue so you could further up the highlights to add more contrast or do some freehand if you're feeling brave, maybe some glowing runes? You could also smooth out the transitions on the robe with a bit of a glaze.

I like both Tenebrous Grey and The Darkness. I'd say The Darknes has maybe a little blue to it and that's the difference, Tenebgrous Grey is a dark grey, almost black but not quite.

My primary range nowadays is AK, then after that probably GW and AP about tied, after that Vallejo. I transitioned away from Vallejo after they changed the formula. Some people thought the Army Painter Blanche set was gimmicky, maybe it was, idk, but I use all of those colors and I am happy with them. Some pretty unique tones there.

I am designing a mold box that I want to 3D print and use for blue stuff casting, and I have come up with this design. It's basically an inner box with unconnected walls that slot into the base, that are then enclosed by an outer box that keeps everything together. On the top there's a push block so I can clamp it down and apply pressure to the mold.

How would I go about formalizing this design? I started with Autocad but it has issues parametrizing 3D objects, I want to be able to set variables so I can alter sizes and tolerances without redoing the whole thing.

That goshdarn primer!
It doesn't spray at all, instead sends a few pathetic drops flying that makes my painting test look like some sort of psychedelic Dalmatians.
I cleaned the nozzle thoroughly
>no change
Cleaned the nozzle with paint remover
>no change
Used a different nozzle
>no change
Shook the bottle intensely
>still no difference
How do I unclog the spray paint, if the problem doesn't come from the nozzle?

Army painter sprays are not great, but main thing is to spray in a warm environment and shake well for at least a couple minutes first.

Since they unfucked their normal paint line with Fanatic and did Speed Paints 2.0 quite quickly after the reactivation shit, it is kind of surprising they haven't completely redone their sprays yet. I don't know anyone who has not had some kind of problems with their spray cans.

LMFAO, don't do this shit, use proper hobby primers, you've probably completely fucked those models now too because it's enamel based, anything strong enough to strip it will melt your plastic. Maybe you'd get lucky with 99% IPA, but I doubt it, that shits designed for outdoor furniture.

Just use fucking hobby primers like valejo, tamiya, colour forge, citadel, monument etc (maybe not AP though, heard they're not great) you're trying to save $10 on primers that will cover $300 in models, and you're fucking up step 1.

remove needle
unscrew nozzle
put nozzle in pot with acetone for a while
shake
good as new

while its soaking put ipa on the cup and let it drip a bit from the tip of the airbrush, then clean it with whatever tube cleaning tool you have

never ever use up all the paint in the cup, if you empty it completely the paint will dry on the needle and the bottom cavities and may cause clogs, also dont fill it too much and rinse it before refilling if its been a while

draw a chain of those sizes on a strip of paper and present it to the model to eyeball the size
for infantry almost every chain you can easily buy (even 1.5mm ones) is too big, for vehicles you have more leeway, it could be cargo ship anchor chain size or just towtruck link size, so depends on what you want it for, still go for the smaller ones imo

also 'life sized' chain is most often flat unlike those on you pic wich are bent for aesthetic purposes because it's designed for jewelry

i havent bought mine on aliexpress but i would go for something like this

Very stupid question, but whats a good way to mix large amounts of GW paints? I have a color scheme that's going to require a lot of 1/1 Contrast medium/Black Templar mix, and I don't want to spend hours mixing up brushfuls on my palette. So I want to make up a jar of the mix, but GW paints come in those weird little flip top pots. If they came in dropper bottles I could just to equal numbers of drops, but I'm not sure what the best way to get equal amounts of paint from GW pots is.

I'll keep this for future reference, but I need to move on to other models. I do have a question about glazing though since the sword was my first real attempt. How would I go about glazing a shape like the robe on my Librarian or even the eye in this pic? Glazing in a straight line is one thing, but I'm not sure how to glaze in round or organic shapes.
Do you do a kind of feathering motion with the glaze along the whole area? I kinda tried something of the sort to soften the lines on the cape. You can see it in the bottom right >>95967569

When you glaze you want a very thin and translucent layer, so translucent that you can't even tell it's there from a single coat. If you're glazing to smooth out transitions you go to your midtone and glaze along the transition. If you are glazing to build a highlight on that robe for example you would go to your bright tone and glaze along the top of the folds to bring up the highlight.

Still very novice painter but I need some advice. Im looking to make a sort of water color type tiedye shit like pic related. I was trying to use it for the bases for my Emperors Children army, cover in black sand and have the color show through on foot prints (or do my usual mordant earth with the colors showing in the cracks). I understand it makes no sense, but what should I use to get a pattern like this? Acrylics seem to just mix and turn into mud.

Painting wise? Probably wet blending or glazing (will take a long time to build the transitions between the tones).

IDK if doable on airbrush with some technique.

Only contrast paints? That's easy because they're so thin already. Just get a pipette. I would also get a paint stirrer (or just use the back of your brush) to really mix and scrape the bottom the black templar pot before you start decanting because some contrast paints separate and pigment start settling and getting stuck at the bottom of the pot.
