The problem isn't capitalism itself, but the context. Currency, and with it capitalism and market economies, developed and matured in city-states. Capitalism can be an engine for productivity and import-replacement in individual city economies with their own currency.
Compare ancient Greece, the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, or renaissance Italy compared to how they've done as national economies.
