sony used their symbols following the same logic of nintendo
the PS started as a CD player add on for the SNES(pic related) and they used the SNES controller.
when they moved onto turning it into their own console, they kept the nintendo layout, but had do use different button namings

A = button 1 = circle = 1 line
B = button 2 = cross = 2 lines
X = button 3 = triangle = 3 lines
Y = button 4 = square = 4 lines
