It is a fact that AC1 went for an idea and playstyle that was made away with as early as the sequel, so if you're someone that loved what the first game tried to do then it's by default the peak of the series because no other Ass Creed tried to follow up from it. AC2 had no investigations, no focus on the modern day mystery, half the game was action scenes like Rocky Road or Infrequent Flier, the other half had fucked pacing like half of Venice. Ezio was a fuckboy action man more than he was a stealthy assassin, and the villain's writing took a hit. Every game after it tried to be AC2 again, which is why even Ubisoft themselves ignore AC1 unless it's to paste Altaïr's robes into the newer games as a Uplay reward. AC1 thus remains wholly unique
