Kazakhstan was fun and people were friendly. The older people were curious and friendly. But to shy to talk. They only spoke Russian, and Kazakh. Blending in is impossible even when white, you don't look like the locals, and you don't look like typical Russians, you stand out. The style is different over there.

I'm not Russian, but I have a good grasp. When you start speaking it, all of a sudden older people get very interested and friendly. Younger people speak English at a basic level. They may come up to you and ask you simple questions for practice or general curiosity. Generally I would say anyone currently younger than 18 speaks a bit of English there.

Last thing I will say. The tourism industry is not to well geared to western travelers. Hotels and restaurants mostly deal in Russian. Sometimes people don't speak English, sometimes menu's are only in Cyrillic. I only had 2 or 3 restaurants where there was English in the menu. So in my opinion Kazakhstan is some what hard mode travel. But good friendly people!
