Gen II is the least popular with the smallest community. Most people will not engage with you on the topic and you will have the deadest ladder.

Gen I is slightly more active but unpopular in its own way. Had a wave a couple years back but is treated like an arcane absurdity.

Gen V gets a bad reputation but still has a dedicated zoomer playerbase. The current leader of Smogon mains this tier.

Gen 4 is under a lot of scrutiny as of late and has received some bad press, but it still gets a lot of play compared to other gens.

Gen III is currently the most popular and talked about non-current-gen OU.

>"Stability"
None or these are stable in the sense of being completely predictable and monotonous. However, you'd most likely find Gen II to be the one which is most quickly understood in the shortest amount of time as far as patterns go.

>Depth
All of them except Gen 4 OU has been proven to have untapped and rewarding depth to "sink into". With that said, the most glory is currently in playing Gen III OU.


The current biggest and most teeming community is in gen3ou, so you wouldn't be going wrong choosing it.
