The main character is a boy who lives with his parents on a small island isolated from the mainland. The first part is an instruction with the father, going into danger and facing the infected. The mother is sick with something unknown to them, but the father does not offer a solution, the boy decides to leave the camp with his mother to see a doctor he heard about. They find that doctor and she decides euthanasia for herself. The boy manages well on his own and in the end he meets a Clockwork Orange-type gang and apparently joins them.
