>In the red-dusted hills of the Appalachian backwoods
>sweat rolled down Nellie’s freckled cheek as she hoisted a feed bag over her shoulder.
>Her faded overalls clung to her like a second skin, soaked in sun, soil, and whatever she’d stepped in this morning.
>Her mop of reddish hair flopped down over her eyes, dirt-caked and stubborn as a mule.
>A black SUV rolled up the long dirt drive in a slow cloud of confusion.

>Out steps a tanned, slick-haired man in sunglasses. He stares.

>He froze. Staring at Nellie.
>She had just brushed the sweat from her brow, causing her bangs to fall out of her eye.
>And in that moment, with her wild hair pulled back, those vibrant, piercing emerald eyes caught the sun.
>Nellie’s eyes, hidden most days beneath her wild tangle of red bangs, were a startling shade of green
>clear and sharp like spring rain on moss, wide with curiosity, and so striking they could stop a stranger mid-step the moment they caught the light

>Sending both the agent and nellie tumbling
>Billie was lucky able to catch the petite girl as she was flung backwards
