That's true for any Xenoblade game. But you're not beating any of the optional bosses or extra modes without understanding the gameplay. Same as 1 and 3.
The difference is that 2 has fast, responsive combat without the clunk of 1 (can't move around while using skills, have to select attacks from a hotbar instead of having bindings like 2) or the slowness of 3 (gotta keep those autoattacks going, gotta wait for Kevesi skill timers).
There's a reason everyone plays as Rex in Future Redeemed. It's an even more fun version of XBC2 Rex, who was already by far the most fun protagonist to control.
