Yet another reason that letting Google have defacto control of the entire fucking Web's standards is a bad idea. Firefox is pretty much the lone bastion of an alternative yet equally capable and feature equipped FOSS browser but people have become massive fucking faggots expecting Firefox to go up against Google's near infinite money yet having a meltdown if Mozilla tries to do anything, no matter how innocuous (ie clearly visible, easily disabled sponsored bullshit on an optional new tab splash, making a deal to resell Mullvad one of the best VPN services etc.). Anyway, Firefox is pretty much the only FOSS project standing in the way of total Blink/Chromium domination and hopefully people will see this shit now with ManifestV2 being disabled
>but for the moment I can reenable it if I...
Supposedly the future versions won't make this so easy
>but what about CHROMIUM_FORK?
Some may keep it for the moment, but there will be a time when it will be incompatible and they'll have to decide between maintaining V2 and updating the rest of the browser, engine etc. This will happen faster if Google sees a lot of pushback and fuckery most likely. One will also have to worry about any massive security holes created by those browsers who try to keep it - kinda like how old Waterfox and Pale Moon had some real issues as I recall keeping old style XPI addons that basically had limitless access to the browser and your system, while trying to get the benefits of the quantum update.
>What about NICHE_BROWSER_PROJECT?
If its FOSS that's all well and good, but even something like Ladybird is planning to be UNIX-like only. We're already having problems with Google basically pushing sites toward Chromium/Blink as the default and everything else has to chase that, so anything that doesn't have equal or better features and compatibility to Firefox isn't going to gain enough marketshare to leverage toward changes
