There was no way to save him. He died before any of our characters went. He got one-shot by their pistol. I think perhaps some things are not written with grimdark unfair in mind since he's probably not supposed to die in literally one shot after an enemy rolls to go first.

Or perhaps he just stands up and starts talking after the fight even though it says dead.
