Reminder:

Romancefaggotry is literally the number one reason behind RPG popularity and pretty much always has been. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend Baldur's Gate 2 wasn't way more successful than Icewind Dale because the latter was essentially just a top down combat simulator while the former gave you dark elf pussy and let you defeat a god at his own game.
The only thing people remember from the base game Neverwinter Nights campaign is wanting to fuck Aribeth and the most memorable part of its expansion is that you can not only bang her but also end up in a harem end with the bad bitch drow assassin.
What's the biggest discussion topic for final fantasy 7? Tifa vs Aerith.
What's the biggest discussion topic for every purse owner game? Who's best girl. Asuka vs Rei is eternal for a reason.
Secondaries only know about Baldur's Gate 3 but in Original Sin 2 it was the same shit flinging over Sibelle vs Lohse, original sin 1's endings are focused over whether or not your main characters forged a soulforge between each other or not.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is remembered for its kick button and Xana's surprisingly loyal and devoted succubus ass.

It turns out that in a genre defined by "slay the dragon, get the girl, be a hero" people care about the "get the girl" part of the fairytale.

Melee combat exists simply because of the threats that also exist, many of them simply favor melee combat, so melee combat becomes a necessity.
There's also good enough armor to make melee combat somewhat more viable, people can take some shots if they're wearing something heavy enough and not being hit by anti-vehicle weaponry, just look at terminators.
It's essentially both of those, although the vast majority of combat isn't done in melee, both the guard and space marines primarily fight at a distance, the guard wins the majority of it's fights by heavy artillery and vehicles, with the guardsmen just holding the line (as again, the majority of enemies get close).
Even drukhari and aeldari who make liberal use of melee have melee units fill specialist roles.

Wrong, he had multiple things working against him, olympia or whatever his planet was called ALREADY worshipped chaos under different names. When he distanced himself from the emperor he went back to study his planets gods and that was that, erebus also actively corrupted him since he knew about chaos and is actively an asshole (his goal is literally just to fuck shit up).
The emperor keeping things hidden and being pissy probably made him seem a lot more suspicious than he had to be.

>explanation to fit swords into what is essentially modern combat
Modern combat doesn't have people dealing with swarms of enemies where there's a 100:1 enemy to ammunition ratio. Also armour has progressed enough that it can usually shrug off normal enemy fire, so you'll "have" to use melee that can typically cut through.

They don't use regular normal metal swords, and there's only so much armor penetration you can put into a revolver without it snapping off your arm, also you can't parry with a revolver and people aren't suicidal to engage something like this with zero actual defense besides "die doing some damage", mostly
>What specialist roles couldn't possibly be fulfilled with modern weaponry?

That is completely wrong, the entire reason the Imperium has devolved into the wretched state its now in is because of Lorgars ideas prevailing. It's one of the great tragedies of the setting. Even Rowboat Girlyman commented on it when he got brought back:

>"Why do I still live? What more do you want from me? I gave everything I had to you, to them. Look what they've made of our dream. This bloated, rotting carcass of an empire is driven not by reason and hope but by fear, hate and ignorance. Better that we had all burned in the fires of Horus' ambition than live to see this."

The Emperor understood Chaos was fueled by emotion, if he allowed everyone to realize it was there and what it was doing it would've gone out of control much earlier than it ended up doing. If he had a bit more time his Webway project would've succeeded and the problem would've been solved. Dark eldar or even an assassin like kibbles are superhumanly fast by irl standards
In urban or voidship combat they can just ran at you and only have to face a few shots before getting in stabbing range
on a full scale battlefield, dark eldar will use their hovercraft to close to melee range
death cult assassins would have a hard time getting close but they aren't usually deployed in setpiece battles except as part of an inquisition force which would probably give them a chimera or razorback to ride around in (depending on what they need to do, they could just be rear guard for enemy melee units)

I've heard that if the Emperor could die properly, he'd just respawn after a while.
That's probably not canon, but even without warp travel of any kind, humans would definitely survive in isolated pockets. Medieval worlds can only exist because some human settlements have basically no contact with the wider Imperium. They wouldn't be a political force, but I'm not sure if that would be such a bad thing.
It's also not impossible that without the Astronomican as a crutch, humans would develop other ways to handle interstellar travel. Other races manage it, and humans aren't dumb, they just live under a system that's incredibly hostile to any kind of innovation.

Not really

Elves have the webway (no go)
Orks actively don't give a shit and travel in an incredibly unsafe way, but they have the luxury of not having to care about keeping their species or empire alive
Necron tech might as well be magic, no hope at all there
T'au travel is really shitty and their entire presence is barely like a sector or whatever the big space squares of territory are called
Tyranid travel also might as well be magic, and it's not even that efficient to boot, but they again have the luxury of working completely outside of human constraints (what's a few hundred years to get somewhere when you don't have any longterm goals?)
Chaos has an incredible amount of options between regular navigators, sorcerers acting as navigators, just using demons to navigate, or praying and coping

It's really either the astronomican or nothing desu

The point is that there are clearly several mechanisms by which interstellar travel can happen, and just because humans don't understand them, it doesn't mean that human's can't ever understand them. Even the seemingly magical ones. There is a mechanism by which the Eldar Webway functions, someone discovered it in the distant past, and it can be discovered again.

More practically, though, I'd suggest something like a smaller-scale localized psychic beacons, operated by lesser psykers. The Astronomican gets dimmer when you're really far away from Terra, meaning that its strength is based on distance, meaning that a less powerful one might still be usable at a shorter range. Put up a whole bunch of them to establish reliable local jump routes, and hop from start to star.
Or just copy what the Tau are doing and accept that it's going to be shitty from now on.

Scorcher of Souls on Hard was tough, I didn't rest after Hepzamirah/Baphomet just to see if I could manage it.
The lich power "Deadly Magic" is really powerful but there's a couple of issues I need to keep in mind:
1) if it's on and I cast something like Siphon Time, then the "no magic casting" affects everyone, companions and enemies alike.
2) it's only three rounds and it stays on so it's REALLY easy to just lose it all pointlessly.
3) I always forget to use it since it needs a bit of care to use and I have so many other things. But man is it powerful.
Scorcher of Souls starts at like 70 AC and his first round he sunbursts you, most likely blinding everyone. Second round is this Fire Storm/Sirocco combo that is absolutely devastating. I flew through Hepzamirah and her crew, basically everything here in Colyphyr mines, but this action by him takes out 3-4 people pretty much without recourse. Woljif has Seamantle, Daeran has a Ring of Evasion and pretty high Dex but my KC, Cam, and Nenio are essentially guaranteed to go down.
Not sure how I'd do it without Deadly Magic honestly. I suppose go rest up and pile on some fire immunity/resistance, communal stoneskin and hope for the best, even at the least getting to the downed KC with a raise dead/resurrect in time. Likely too far negative to come back with a single breath of life/inspiring recovery.
Whew, I'd say that's been the toughest fight so far in the game. AND now we get to level before heading back to the Nexus, fuck yeah.

Side note: I really fucking hate the way Dispelling works in this game. It's amazing to me that protections and stripping protections/debuffs is somehow 10x better in oldBG from 25 years ago. Is this an Owlcat thing or a PF thing?

I agree with Kibbelah on most things, but not this one. They drugged him, which means he didn't consent to anything, which means it wasn't betrayal. He can't control what enters his bloodstream.

Now, with enough faith, you actually can. You can believe the poison doesn't affect you because the Emperor stops it from affecting you and that becomes true if you believe it hard enough, but that level of faith is not expected of some random naval officer, that's a Sororitas or living saint level of faith. So getting mad and calling him a betrayer because he's not supernatural is kind of silly.

But I'm trying to do a dogma playthrough which means I just click on the dogma option for the points.

So it's essentially the same in tabletop though? What I'm specifically referring to is how BG1&2 had all these tiers of spell protections and stripping.. Globe of Invulnerability for area effects, spell turning, remove magic, dispel, a whole number of others.
This made it pretty fun to figure out how to best approach stripping off protections, and felt like Cool Wizard Shit (tm). Just having a blanket "Dispel" is, by contrast, ... pretty shit. But that's how tabletop PF works as well?

You're mistaken. Faith has real power in 40k and Sororitas regularly bring people back to life or bend bullets way from themselves by praying. You're right that it's a "miracle" in name, but you're wrong that it's reserved for large groups or just psykers. A single individual can have enough faith to ignore wounds, ignore injuries, set things on fire spontaneously, make their weapon do more damage, and drive ships by closing your eyes and letting the emperor steer. These things have all happened, and they're all happened when one individual believed so it's not a matter of numbers.

If you get shot, you can ignore the wound for as long as you believe the Emperor needs you to stay alive, and then you drop dead when your job is done. But this is only possible by people who have extreme faith, regular people who just sorta like the Emperor but don't truly believe can't do these things. It's locked behind being truly fanatical. Which is why you shouldn't hold it against some random officer that he didn't do this, it's not reasonable to expect. But it's a thing that is not based on reason.

No, they're not psyker powers. There is a distinction between faith abilities and psyker powers. It sounds like you should read more recent lore because you're outdated.

A non-psyker can use faith abilities, and even people who are not saints or Sororitas can call upon them at-will if their belief is strong enough. The source of the power is the Emperor, not the warp. This is a fundamental aspect of the setting.

You might be confused due to the distinction that the Emperor's power is ultimately from the warp, but it would still be inaccurate to say that his followers are using the warp when they utilize their abilities, since the Emperor is the source now. The warp has made him into a powerful entity that affects the galaxy, even more so than he was when he was mortal and a psyker himself. He has become more than that as a result of the Imperium's belief in him. Faith affected reality.

>What the combat feels most like, is a card game, where you can build your deck the way you want and always draw the same opening hand, with that opening hand always being a one-turn-victory. So every single fight is exactly the same, it doesn't even feel like playing a game.

>They try to get around this by making fights with phases, or triggered immunities that force fights to take more than 1 round, but that's just lame.

>There are too many ways to do a million damage in one turn in this stupid combat system.

>To make it even worse, building characters and leveling is fucking boring as well. We have all these hundreds of talents are not only extremely specific, but also completely fucking pointless; I don't even really level 4 of my companions after act 3, because they never get to do anything anyway. I just pick whatever talent happens to be at the top of the list and go with that, it literally doesn't matter.

>The Pathfinder games are the same way; the combat is fucking boring, because you just do the same exact overpowered shit in every single fight. Just buff your OTK-guy and then OTK the entire screen. You got all these stats and talents and classes, and it doesn't matter; it's all a mirage, just completely pointless and a waste of your time to read or think about.

>The combat may as well only be there in these titles so that they don't get classified as point-and-click games.

Rogue trader would be a great setting for a show. There's enough variety for interesting self-contained episodes, and it's more than just armies smashing into each other.
The actual Rogue Trader plot could be adapted into a show very well
>Ep 1: To Reclaim What Was Lost
Intro, Kunrad's betrayal, meet Abelard, Argenta, and Idira. Probably introduce Kibber here too
>Ep 2: Encounters at Rykad
Pasqal and Jimmy, maybe rescuing Evayne Winterscale if that character is going to be used later
>Ep 3: The Final Dawn
Cassia's station, and return to Rykad Minoris for the parade and the big battle to end chapter 1
>Ep 4: Footfall
Jae and the rest of the side characters of Footfall station. Might not be enough meat here for a full episode
>Ep 5: Elantach
Change of scenery to a jungle planet, recruit Yrliet and encounter a subject governor for the first time
>Ep 6: Shield and Shadow
Kibber centric episode where you venture into the lower decks, beginning of the genestealer plot

Now you have a full cast and can fill out the rest of the first season with sidequest planets. The Halo Device would make a good ep by itself. Encounter Marazhai from time to time being a nuisance.
>Final episode of Season 1: The Trial
Return to Dargonus and meet Calzone, thus setting up the arc for season 2. And you know what happens next

>S2 Ep 1: The Dark City
Self explanatory, but the have some material for the crew left back on the ship, maybe they're trying to find you. Recruit Ulfar
Rest of S2 is more sidequest planets, but also receiving assignments from Calzone

I would cast this fatass from Season 2 of Severance as Ulfar. He's already huge and Icelandic which suits the character.

Nah, that would be lame. He's good the way he is. You just have to present an insentive to keep him for longer than commoragh. For example you could make a deal with him that after you escape he helps you find and put down the archont of that toher kabal which is beneficial both to him and to you, since he gets his revenge for being played for a fool, and you reduce the number of drukeks in the universe as well as taking your own revenge

It's because it differs depending on your original class. The servo skull is much better in the hands of an officer than the other classes, so someone who wasn't an officer would say the skull sucks. Most people agree the raven is the best because there are some insane biomancer and diviniation abilities to transmit through it but I've honestly come to respect the servo skull after playing with it some more. It provides cover, deflection, healing, and transmits officer abilities through it to everyone in the aoe, and if you want to use it offensively it can float over to enemies and make them all shoot each other.

Right now my personal ranking, after having them all in my party and being level 33, is that the skull and the raven are amazing, and the dog and the eagle fall behind a bit.

Right now I'm a noble-officer-strategist doing the usual tried and true buffs on Kibellah/Argenta and Jae is actually my servo skull user, and I find myself actually excited for my next playthrough where I will try the servo skull for myself as Noble-Officer-Overseer to gain the unique overseer player character content.

The dog is by far my biggest disapointment. In theory it's the one that does the most damage on paper but I guess owlcat felt that might be a balance issue if one does real direct damage while the others are mostly utility, but that made him fall behind. meanwhile the raven gives your entire team aoe psychic powers which directly segues into your team killing everybody and being unkillable. But because it's not the raven itself doing 200 damage it's ok.

Once again we arrive to the conclusion that the only explanation is that she is utterly retarded - like, drool coming out of the mouth retarded - becasue the game does not offer any other possibility. More fun discoveries with that electric discharge sword. The enemy receives a stack for each point of damage and retains those stacks forever, and discharges the stacks regardless of what kills them. Kibellah is currently all the way on the other side of the room killing the beastmasters, but she just killed the rogue trader who was by the throne because an enemy Kib hit last turn died to damage from Cassia. Kib's 300 lightning stacks killed the RT even though she didn't deal the killing blow to the charged enemy, was on the other side of the room, and the charges were from the previous round. This sword is pretty fun and adds entertaining gameplay because it's actually rather dangerous.

Tips:
Don't do "hack of all trades" at all, everyone should push into one primary thing and a secondary thing almost exclusively.
You get recommended initial 2 characters but there's no reactivity, feel very free to make your own from scratch.
In retrospect it's kinda 'short' but that's also me wanting everything to be BG1&2/WotR tier. It's solid, and I felt good on finishing it, There's pretty decent choices and routes you can approach or deal with things. I will play it again someday.

What's a fun build for Overseer? I'm stuck at the character screen and can't figure out what I want to be. I like to have a portrait associated with my build and finding good quality character art is a bit rough.

No, I already told you that I go for Abelard and Cassia. Also that image is stupid. Calcazar would encourage Jimmy to whore himself out to get better intel, not object to it. He strikes me as that kind of guy, it's also the reason why I think Solomorne romance is just parts of Jimmy romance that didn't make it into the final version. They're in very similar positions

I'd bet that Calcazar knows Jimmy better than Jimmy himself knows himself, and that the reason why he didn't make him an Inquisitor yet is because he's not sure if he can pull this out, and that his mission on RT's vessel is a test. They've not been beaten out of him throughout all his years and yes, Jimmy is really good at his job but his humanity is likely a weakness to Xavier.
