Appearance is more important and more powerful than substance in the US. Mike Rowe was selling shit on QVC and landed a job that featured interesting, blue collar jobs. People saw him and associated him with said jobs. He just played up that association to champion whatever talking points most lucratively aligned with this image. It just so happened to align with the college bubble beginning to pop as cost of living has increased and many non-manual labor jobs are being replaced by AI and LLMs.

He has some valid points but like most people in the public sphere he's a vapid shell peddling whatever gets him paid.
