Long movies are generally better because it means they've given the director and writer ample time to properly flesh out the story and characters.
That doesn't necessarily mean every story has to be dragged out to 9h but there's a good reason the best movies ever made linger longer.
You're not gonna convince me, or anyone sane, that you could improve the godfather if you cut out 50 minutes from it.
