The other benefits of alert is that even if you would be going last anyway in your party, you'd still want to take your turn before an enemy so that helps.

And alternatively, in the rare situation where someone gets super fucked due to a trap or something, you can have a better rolling player swap with you so that you can heal/lesser restoration them immediately so they don't lose their first turn

Also, familiars roll their own initiative, so you can swap with them as well.
