If on steam, you have to disable steam's controller support since it conflicts with it. If native support doesn't work, then you have to use steam's controller support to make your controller register as an xbox controller.

I'm using an 8bitdo Pro 2 Ultimate controller and it works perfectly. I can switch to DS4 mode and the game registers it as a Playstation controller with PS4 button prompts on screen, switching to Switch/Xbox mode both uses the Xbox button prompts.
