I believe they shit-canned the original Ariella out of existence (by Alex Luthor rewriting reality), possibly because she's proof that a beloved male comic hero wasn't gay or sexless. After all, Superman is only supposed to be raising gay sons or children who aren't his.

So, in order to make sure Superman was sufficiently cucked, they replaced the OG Ariella with a completely different Ariella Kent, who is actually the biological bastard daughter of Lois Lane and some douche named Grant Gabriel. She grew up thinking she was Clark Kent's daughter. Then she found out she wasn't... then she developed powers out of nowhere, many of which resemble the original Ariella's, just so she's not the only child in the family without powers - to each according to their needs, I guess...
She calls herself Supergirl and wears the 'S' but she doesn't have a drop of Kryptonian in her, because she seized the means of production or something.
