I think Dogville is also my favorite from Lars. It's him at his most "idiot savant", that is to say, a perfect read of American society (and "small town" mentality) from someone who never set foot inside it, and whose understanding of America comes from reading Mark Twain and watching David Lynch flicks. It's also one of the few films I'd describe as authentically Nietzschean.
Not sure if I vibe with your reading of Melancholia as commercialized, however, it's a rather psychologically rich film, and its merits have changed for me as I've grown older. It's also where I first fell in love with Charlotte...

Caveat emptor! Some of those late-career Miles albums are pretty heinous. And do not dare skip any of the 70s live records (Agharta, Pangaea, Dark Magus), those are la crème de la crème. Much has been said about McLaughlin, but Pete Cosey, who plays on those 3, might be my favorite jazz guitarist not named Sonny Sharrock.
