>>212325528Actually, I think the excess of trauma was what created the monster that I am, and that therefore enables me to do as I want with whoever I want. Enough chimping out, go with your thread as usual, lads. But always remember: if you were in my shoes you'd do the same.
>>212325604No, genuinely, you are all this unbearable because no one would belt your ass for acting like an obnoxious faggot at age 10.

Bullied at school, bullied in high school.
Drug overdose at 19 left me with permanent central nervous system damage. Drugs were laced btw
You see? I never had free will. I am the result of a society that doesn't gives a fuck. You're just one of many, you judge, yet you don't know shit, and you don't help. For so many truecels and philosophical truecels, it was over before it started.
>>212324437 (OP)What do we think about Sarah Gadon's summer favorites?
>In the summer, I always love to watch An American in Paris and American Graffiti over and over. I think both of those represent such interesting points in American filmmaking. As Canadians, by the time we get to summer weโve come out of this long winter and thereโs this real strong sense of nostalgia for summer, which is probably why I watch those two
>>212325774>my gf of 5 years betrayed me for my best friend, after I fell into depression due to my grandma's death.Women really do be doing shit like that like it's nothing.
Gentlemen, my fellow lensing enthusiasts. How do you think this shot was lensed?
My speculation: Two identical cameras with identical settings at the same height, filming at the same time. The left-hand camera pans and moves next to the stationary right-hand camera. They're likely on the same dolly rig, since both cameras move at the same time. The right-hand camera movement is hidden in plain sight by drawing your attention to her walking.
>>212325411Speaking of jizz... Cholette was a cute in this!
>>212325542You said to forget about Miles and listen to Mingus. However, I wasn't able to abandon my journey through Miles's oeuvre. I wanted to undergo a kind of spiritual effacement, similar to one of Robert Bresson's models - you know, to do the same shit so many times you enter a kind of transcendent, affectless state where the truth of ur actions are revealed (because I'm writing a novel, so I would like my Self to disappear as much as possible whilst writing) - so I kept grinding away with Miles. I've listened to 40 of about 60 albums. I promise I'll listen to Mingus Ah Um when I'm finished...
>>212325774If it has not yet started then start. If it has started and finished then start something else. You think you only live one life but people live many little lives. Roman Polanski is at once a little boy that survived the holocaust and a child rapist. People who can't understand why people still support his endeavours, are the people who don't understand that people contain multitudes. If you truly do have the ability to do as you want with whoever you want, then give a girl a flower, or get a handy in a cinema bathroom in tribute to Tsaisis. You admit yourself that you can do anything you want in this world, yet you only want to do bad things. You can do a lot of good things too. I was in the depth of depression a few weeks ago, and when I dropped something in the store, a little girl bent down and picked it up for me. It made me very happy and broke through the ice of my disposition. I'm sure people are doing little kindnesses for you like that in your life... learn to notice them as they happen, I suggest. I think you want to pretend you don't have free will so as you don't feel guilty about not changing the circumstances of your shitty mind and shitty life.
>>212326225I actually voted for Freddy Got Fingered in my /film/ canon ballot last year. I can't fathom why. I was really impressed when I saw it at the time.
This is what Iโm saying: you hate your life.
But you donโt know what life is.
Life is too huge for you to possibly hate.
If you hate life, you havenโt seen enough of it. If you hate your life, itโs because your life is too small and doesnโt fit you. However big you think your life is, itโs nothing compared to whatโs out there [โฆ] Do you know the phrase printed on those fire extinguishers bolted to the wall and locked inside a box? The ones at every school and in every building downtown?
In case of emergency, break glass.
When your life reaches the state of emergency and the only thing you can think to do is end it, maybe the thing to do is break it. Walk out the door.
So I did.
โAugusten Burroughs, This Is How
>>212326314>forget about Miles and listen to Mingus. That does sound like me, kek. I was being somewhat hyperbolic, it's just that a lot of people want to get into jazz and they go to Miles because he's the biggest name, and then they sort of get stuck there, and naturally fall into his fusion/rock stuff, drifting far from their original "wanting to get into jazz".
>>212326314>>212326441He's not gonna listen you know.
>>212326102I think the easier thing to do would be to film the left side first, then once the camera is in its final position, film the right side and splice both sides together in post.
>>212326533That would make more sense if the right-hand camera didn't move at all. If they were shot separately, the right-hand camera could just be static.
But on a second thought they could've just moved the right-hand camera in post. But then again, why move at all if it didn't have to get out of the way for another camera?

Is this actually any good? I tried watching it a long time ago but turned it off after 15 minutes because it just felt like trashy soft core porn. Now I'm reading the book and I can't put it down. Should I give it another chance once I'm finished reading?
Three stars. Watch on second monitor.
The movie takes a really interesting premise (sheltered halfwit wandering through a big city and mutually misunderstanding interactions with other people) and almost immediately transitions into a less interesting premise (same thing but yet another satire of rich people and politicians with him in a mansion instead of on the streets).
It then continues to get full usage of and somewhat wear through this premise throughout a two hour movie that goes nowhere and really should have been abbreviated to 90 or 70 minutes since there is no real development.
A mere flick ultimately, but an entertaining one at least.

>>212331339Let's make up our own film theory ITT
imagine you were trying to draw a sort of gantt chart of a movie's progression by having the run time as the x axis and the rows of the y axis labelled as types of scenes/sequences, one or more of which is filled, as applicable, for any given instant of runtime.
Now you have your basic types of scenes and you have subdivisions within those. I'll write some down and you guys can come up with some more or how you would reorganize them.
Remember a given scene can be colored in as one or more of any of these including multiple subcategories within one category, as needed,
Action scenes: scenes displaying intricate actor motion and/or lots of cuts and quick camera movements, subcategorized by acrobatics/parkour, shooting, brawling (hand to hand, martial arts, knives and swords all included), sex, chase
Visual spectacles: scenes with little to no dialogue and maybe dramatic music, still camera or large sweeping motions or zooming in or out typical, subcategorized by natural, urban, CGI/fantastical, indoors, fanservice (strippers or lead actress showering or protagonist cleaning and loading guns or whatever), still life/setpiece focused (including long establishing shots that switch focus between a person or people and an object in the foreground/background), introductions (shots of various parts of a set, town, etc before the actual movie or scene begins to establish a "vibe")
Montages: Any sort of timelapse/summary scene, subcategories: training arc (includes studying/investigation), travel arc/lapse, action arc (something from action scenes like brawling or sex but in a montage style rather than one continuous and related scene), character study (various elements from the life or situation of a character collated for brevity), abstract (discrete elements from different things brought together in a non-narrative fashion to create a "vibe" or evoke mixed emotions in the viewer)
>>212331680Talk scenes: scenes that are mainly just about characters talking to each other, subcategories: slow silence (kind of a contradiction, this is for the meaningful stares and facial expressions with little or now dialogue), comic relief, exposition (further divided into plot or character background), cooldown (a conversation largely unrelated to the main plot or circumstances of the characters, as a sort of palette cleanser like comic relief but less intensely dissonant), bonding, conflict/ultimatum, romance.
And then some other misc scenes like solo hero gathering resolve, group mourning fallen member, victory scene, etc
that's all I can think of off the top of my head

>The films that have influenced me run the gamut from The Wizard of Oz to The Godfather. My parents showed me both of those movies when I was really young. My parents always loved film. They werenโt in the industry but have a real love and admiration for filmmaking. I also think that because I had an older brother I was exposed to a lot of films that I maybe shouldnโt have seen at the age that I saw them.>My mom has such a great background in film. When I was growing up, she would always tell me I had to watch movies with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. My Italian grandparents would say I had to watch The Bicycle Thief. The Italian roots in my family are definitely part of the reason why I love Italian film. My British grandparents are film buffs too. Theyโd say I had to watch Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

>>212331339Flicks today are bad. Because all screenwriters and directors went to film school and all learnt how to make a movie. How to tell a story. By all reading the same textbook. Like, first scene. The protagonist has to save the cat. Two thirds into the movie is the culmination of the rising action. All movies feel samey. Beat-by-beat, you feel it coming. Movies used to be good and interesting because directors and screenwriters stumbled into the career after being like sailors or hobos for the fist half of their life. And they had theories and ideas about how to tell a story. But, they were idiosyncratic theories.

Hi /film/ I noticed your OP image and it looks a lot like that Blade Runner 2049 scene I bet that fella Dennis was inspired by that scene in your fancy people movie. Do you think that's possible? Also happy 4th and God Bless.
Do people only add movies to Letterboxd that they saw after making the account? I felt like adding every movie I've ever seen but a lot of them are blockbusters that everyone has seen and I follow some critics that would for sure have seen these movies but they haven't logged them. Also some of the movies I've seen over 10 years ago and barely remember so it feels dishonest logging them. I am not trying to impress anyone just want to get a proper record of how many movies I've actually seen.
>>212336447You can just mark them as watched without logging or rating them.
>>212324881>>212324437 (OP)I think Dogville is also my favorite from Lars. It's him at his most "idiot savant", that is to say, a perfect read of American society (and "small town" mentality) from someone who never set foot inside it, and whose understanding of America comes from reading Mark Twain and watching David Lynch flicks. It's also one of the few films I'd describe as authentically Nietzschean.
Not sure if I vibe with your reading of Melancholia as commercialized, however, it's a rather psychologically rich film, and its merits have changed for me as I've grown older. It's also where I first fell in love with Charlotte...
>>212326314Caveat emptor! Some of those late-career Miles albums are pretty heinous. And do not dare skip any of the 70s live records (Agharta, Pangaea, Dark Magus), those are la crรจme de la crรจme. Col me down on the pannysty, my dammies. SA DA TAY!

>>212335762Definitely an "inspiration". Happy 4th fren!
>>212336447I started responding 40 minutes ago, couldn't choose a picture, got carried away and spent 40 minutes refilling my folder with 16 fresh pictures.
My original response: I signed up for lbx when I had watched a bit less than 200 sequences of equidistant pictures. I marked them as "watched". Took me a little bit after that to find out about the logging feature.
>>212324437 (OP)>mutt holiday edition>worst thread in a long time
>>212336447>Also some of the movies I've seen over 10 years ago and barely remember so it feels dishonest logging them.I'm in the same boat because it's likely you would rate differently if you rewatch it rather than basing your rating from ten years ago. Partly why I'm trying to rewatch some old classics as my perspective has probably changed since then.

>Land of Broken Hearts (2024)
I can't say I ever watch quirky Chinese dramas but this ended up being pretty enjoyable. I'm a sucker for surreal stuff so I appreciated the meta/sci-fi angle they were going for with an alien film crew following the main characters; for a romance, it also manages to keep from being too saccharine until near the very end. There's a scene where the main characters inhabit each others' flashbacks that stood out to me plus the Chaplin homage was cute. Anons into WKW would probably enjoy this film (saw tons of comparisons) so I can see why Dallebro recommended it.
Klaus is my favourite Kinski.
>>212341390>Anons into WKW would probably enjoy this film I will now never watch this film.
>>212341838Reminder that he was actually Polish and not German
Sarah is my favorite Gadon.
Listening to Saxophone Fake Nanako, thinking about the weight of the air, contemplating Earth's gravitational pull.

>>212350858no, it'd have different perspective
>>212326533this dude is right, it's a composite shot
It's such an interesting thing though, when De Palma does split screen he's using to show actions that are happening at the same time in different places, it's a clever way of not having to cut between scenes, here they're in the same room, the lady simply moves from the fridge to the couch a couple of inches away, the split is completely pointless (and it doesn't even look cool), the whole thing could've been done in one shot/camera, by simple movement.
>>212350977An UNinteresting*
>>212350930The right-hand camera moving to the right still trips me out. Could just be a creative choice instead of a technical choice, to make the transition smoother.
