>when basically every avenue was explored
Was it really?
I can think of a hundred different diplomatic options that could have been explored, but they were never tried or tested before the Germans resorted to war.
The question will also be as to why there was so much urgency to claim Danzig specifically in 1939? And my argument would be that 1939 simply was a bad time to pursue further territorial demands since the German governmnet was perfectly aware that German troops seizing Prague caused an outrage in the west. 1939 would be the opportunity to lay low, let the alarmists in the west cool off, otherwise you're only proving the warhawks correct when you pursue further conquest with zero regard to foreign relations.
So;
Did Hitler try to pursue Danzig through the LoN? Why didnt he at least try rejoin it for that purpose? isnt it preferable to war?
Did Hitler try use a mediator neutral third party? Did he try to call for a conference? Did he try to propose a joint administration and economic zone as a starter to further negotiations? Did he make any offers at all or was Danzig more a demand rather than a negotiation? A negotiation relies on the fact that there is an offer.
Did Hitler propose any concessions? Did he offer any guarantees to Poland? Why not offer a non-aggression pact, since it was Hitler who voided the Polish-German Non-aggression pact earlier.
Did he offer a population exchange with the Polish minority in Germany and the German minority in Poland, similar to the successful population exchange done by Greece and Turkey in 1920, which avoided a war.
Did he propose any custom union or joint benefits or joint administration as a starter.
Did Hitler even consider the fact that negotiations can resume under a different government? This is was states ordinarily do. The Greek - Macedonian negotiation lasted for 30 years before it was resolved when both Macedonia and Greece had a different government, thus war was avoided.
