I need to do an updated version of my debunking of this, but pic is the old one I did. Just keep in mind there's a lot i'd add to it now, and has some errors, especially in the sacrifice section, and ironically in contrast to >>213092905 I feel like I was not nearly as impartial in it as I am now.

None of the stuff we're seeing in the Amazon is anywhere close to as densely urbanized or populated as the main areas of Aztec civilization. Some of the Amazonian sites are probably actually big enough to be considered proper cities, but most aren't and wouldn't be exceptional by Mesoamerican standards. This isn't really me trying to dunk on the Amazonian stuff, it's def way more then a few tribes building villages, but parts of Mesoamerica were plausibly as densely populated as some parts of Western Europe at the time: it's just not a fair comparison.
