I hate this very much too.
We used to have written emphasis (diacritics) but it got cancelled (church still has it), and the result is even natives make mistakes all the time to the point of heated discussions (should we allow logical but "hillbilly" звóнить or stick with arbitrary correct звoни́ть?)
