Smear on the ground or not he would realize she died and time traveled, everything still plays out if he hears she purposefully jumped or something or decides to visit the school when she isn't home and overhears it happened since he is attached to her anyway.
I get that it is supposed to be a dark subversion of using something lighthearted in the opposite way it was intended but it felt really contrived to me and I don't think it is clever or deep commentary, just a cheap shock which comes obvious to someone if you aren't a cretin who can read any subtext at all.
