Anyway, >>714653006 has a point, but I want to point out that JRPGs are trendsetters too; a lot of anime started copying tropes from DQ and I feel like FFVII might have finalized the shift from the old designs which were already out of vogue. The gist of it is you can't expect the same types of designs to persist after we got a good 2 or so decades out of them.
