>does the cable only work with ps2
The PS2 component cable is only for ps2/ps3. The scaler is for everything, every console I have goes through it. 10 consoles from 4th to 6th gen. I don't go above 480p, but I believe it can handle 720p. Just haven't used it because I still play on a CRT. PS2 runs games at a low resolution of 512x448 most commonly, but this is the same resolution as most Gamecube games. GC however does scale the image up to proper 4:3 instead of 8:7, and because it's such a small scaling operation it doesn't show many artifacts at all especially on a CRT. This does help present a clearer image.
For PS2 the best you can do is with a scaler like this. You can force all kinds of games into 480p, correct for 8:7 so you get a proper 4:3 image and with component cables like from HDRetrovision you can get a clear and clean image. There are certain realities that 480i from most games presents, and the scaler helps with its adaptive deinterlacing to the point it almost looks like real 480p. Despite all the woes over picture quality and resolution I find the best looking PS2 games to be in a league of their own. Onimusha 3 and The Zone of the Enders 2, Shadow of the Colossus and Jak 2 and God of War 2 present incredible visuals you just don't get on its peers. Just takes a few extra steps to get the absolute best out of it.
>people get mad about the concept of exclusives
I see their arguments but I believe that exclusives are the best games they could be. Even today I think this holds true despite the idea of exclusives being so muddied. I don't like the pretense from total biscuit types about the concept being outdated. There's a bigger picture in their creation and that sort of discourse has muddied the waters. Exclusivity is bigger than just being on one box, it's about the environment that enables, taking advantage of unique inputs and hardware, the budget and tech support allocated.
