Inside the main temple walls there’s literally a line of 500 ruined Buddha statues that are all smashed to pieces because their heads were originally stuffed full of gold. So when Ayutthaya was sacked by Burma they destroyed everything and took all the gold. Originally these structures were gold plated too.
