We spot other planes with black body radiation that all objects that are warm emit, but this type of IR also gets absorbed by moisture and the atmosphere unless the conditions are really good.
Blackbody radiation is amazing for spotting things because the background is usually very monocolor even in darkness, and even small amounts of IR emissions, or even lack of, stands out against a mono background of the sky.
I'll post another image in a moment showing the windows of wavelengths that light can pass through, which is also the reason we use radar, and is also the reason we as larger animals evolved the visual optics we use today (insects and night animals operate at smaller scales and at night, atmospheric interference is less of an issue at that scale and night sight more important and thus they use wider spectrums.)
