Ian was always mainly an Archie guy and while he seemed like a better choice for Sonic than the TV writers who created Happy Tree Friends, ultimately he's very antithetical to what Sonic is in subtler ways. The "Sonic is like the wind" people are completely correct - he's not the same character but the misunderstandings are very similar to anglophones not really getting Goku and IDW Sonic is Funimation DBZ (if Toei had embraced Funimation DBZ...)

Just the very idea of "Eggman could carpet bomb Sonic if he wanted" is fucking terrible
