They literally control sex and reproduction.
We used to use the, "too bad, we need kids" (cultural / soft "rape" approach by convincing women this just the way it works) when we actually had a patriarchy and not a rich fucktardarchy.
And there was always the overt rape method available for making new neonates. Still on the table today in some grim places.
But the majority of our human history was pair-bonding, maybe some free association, then let the tribe/village raise the kid when you went to your "job". Until the advent of warlords and hypergamy, I guess. Where we sort of are now... again.
