The 5 layer process was also guess work, assuming that the 5 layers would be equivalent of one solid 5 inch thick hull. Nobody had any data on that. The first layer is already cured when the second layer is being applied, with an adhesive between, then cured again , then same for each layer, so the 1st layer has been through the vaccuum oven 5 times. Did the next layer shrinking onto an already cured layer even properly bind with the glue sheet inbetween? In the wreckage you can see what looks like separated layers
