Remember this fucking idiot

>carbon fiber is totally fine for deep pressure
>despite everyone telling him its not
>production process shows that lumps in the layers were manually sanded down, breaking the loops of fiber
>multiple inch think layers glued together and heat treated 5 times
>cracking sounds when testing it himself, carried on anyway
>fired anyone who raised concerns
>carbon fiber tube glued to titanium endrings with about an inch of join, hand applied glue with plastic scrapers
>reused parts from 1st model that got struck by lightning and cracked while stored outside

The actual final hull was tested once in a chamber. The hull was needed to be 5 inch thick (no one really knows who decided that, boeing recommended at least 7 inches. Probably because he already had a 5 inch joining ring he could reuse from the first version). Company that was to heat treat the hull refused to do 5 inches at once, so they did it in 1 inch layers that were cured separately then a layer of glue and another inch added and cured, 5 times. Meaning that the first layer was already cured whent he second layer was added, then cured again when doing the second layer and so on. That design was tested once, and then used.

Offcut parts of the ring showed many cases of pic related, where they hand-sanded lumps on each layer, meaning those fibers were not complete rings at all.

Daily reminder that this was sabotage from big subnautical. The sub made the dive safely a dozen times. His sub was an order of magnitude cheaper than the industry leaders. He was on a path to make subs affordable for all. Every family would be able to buy a summer sub, disrupting the whole sub tourism industry. They took him out.

The design by Boeing would have apparently been just fine had there existed a manufacturer capable of making it. Boeing suggested doing 45 degree angles for the carbon fiber (cross weaved).
But the manufacturer they used also apparently did not make a very good product either. The porosity was high and there was a lot of bubbles that they ground down before adding more layers.

It definitely is possible to use carbon fiber theoretically, just not in practice due to manufacturing complexity.

He had a distant ancestor who was also involved in a naval disaster with poorly made technology.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Genealogy/comments/14h9x7r/oceangate_ceo_stockton_rush_kept_reminding_me_of/

He was descended from two Founding Fathers, his wife was descended from two famous Jews who died on Titanic.

If he had any kids, they would do well to stay away from the North Atlantic.

Even thouhg it probably wasn't the front window failing that caused it, that angered me too. Apparently some guy in the navy spent his entire life, like 40 years, studying and documenting different sizes and shapes of portholes, and the depths they can take. And that is the bible that eeveryone uses when making portholes. And tese clowns said "fuck that" and went with their own flawed design that was inherently weak just to improve visability. And trhe people making it refused to rate it anywhere near the required depth, and they still used it anyway

i see it all the time on bike forums, people buy a nice expensive bike with carbon everything and every single time something eventually fails. some are so bad like forks randomly exploding that people die from it because it gives out on a down hill and they fly into a tree

It doesn't really matter if the fibres were complete rings, because the fibres wouldn't do anything in a vessel like this in the first place. It would be important with a conventional pressure vessel, but since it was a submarine the fibres were really just reducing the strength of the (already vastly insufficient) resin hull.

Titan did 13 dives to Titanic depth before failing, and its catastrophic failure was the first dive that didn't get instantly scrubbed after the cracking sound incident. If you watch the detailed breakdowns and see just how shitty the entire construction process was and how many corners were cut, just being 10% less shitty in every individual aspect would have gone a long way.

I still can't believe that they didn't first test a hull to destruction and then set the lifetime at half that number of dives, but instead just threw on some sonic/shear sensors with the vague hope that'd give them enough warning (as in not telling you the hull's delaminating when you're an hour below the surface), and then when those sensors then actually worked on the last ascent and said STOP NOW, they just ignored them and went down to die

Every time I think about it I feel like I'm going insane. It'd be like miners ditching every gas safety system and just bringing a canary, and then when that canary dies just shrugging and continuing deeper into the methane

I read an article where he was specifically told that every time he heard a pop during decent or assent, it was a carbon fiber bond snapping. And once it snapped, it's gone - zero integrity after that. So you had a design that was inherently limited in lifespan. Each dive down and up, there's a bunch of popping noises, and each one is a small step closer to an unknown but inevitable point of catastrophic failure.
And this guy kept making dives with his video game controller without a clue as to what would be the final pop. Just an amazing level of stupidity.

Honestly the biggest problem OceanGate has was how shitty and unreliable the sub's electronics were. Most of the attempted dives were scrubbed due to electronics issues, wiring issues, losing communications with the surface, navigation failures. They were only operating on such razor thin margins due to the sheer number of failed dives. If they had just spared no expensive on the electronics and software they easily could have done enough dives to pay for replacing the hull in a safe number of dives.

The video game controller wasn't the stupid part. A dualstick is already a perfectly good control surface. Lots of surprisingly advanced systems use ordinary gamepads because they're cheap and made to hold up. You couldn't purpose build a better item for cheaper if what you need is a controller for something.
The dumb part of using cheap gamepads was not bringing like four of them.

Alos the end of the cylinder had to ground down to fit in the recess of the ring because it came out a bit over 5 inches when finished. That little recess in the bottom of the ring was the entire attaching point of the cylinder to the ring, and that was joined with a hand-applied layer of glue. The thin flanges around the ring were completely sheered off in the wreckage.

He needed an input system to control the craft along 4 axes. He could have a custom setup built for thousands of dollars, or just use a $25 video game controller which is the end result of decades of experience and untold millions of dollars of design and manufacturing meant to produce the best possible input system for exactly what you need. I think thats where it failed too, if the hull bows in the middle slightly, then it pushes out the flanges on the ring. Or any flaw means the cylinder would be slightly off-round or if the titanium ring is affected differently then the carbon fiber then that joint fails. The front dome was found a bit away from the rest of it and the flanges were torn clean off. Front ring failure point, everything squashed into the back end

Yeah that might have helped. Its just everything together. It seems like a structurally weak design, joining two different materials together that will react differently under pressure, also using unconventional material, also being manufactured poorly, and not tested enough to save money. The more you look into it, the more inevitable it seems.

>as if everyone else was a stupid fuck for building redundancy into a sub that's going 3-4 miles down.
They did have control redundancy, though, through the screen. It'd take a total electrical failure to leave the sub uncontrollable, and in that case they had two absolute-zero-power ascent solution, electromagnetically held weights and weights that could be rocked off.
He was smug about not spending thousands to create a big custom video game controller when you could buy 100 arguably better controllers for that price, and in that one thing he was correct.

Now, for not testing this experimental hull to destruction and then setting the service life as 50% of the number of dives? Suicidally stupid. Slapping some acoustic/shear sensors on the hull and hoping that'd give you enough warning of delamination to surface before you're all instantly atomized? Almost insanely unbelievably suicidally stupid stupid. And then by sheer incredible dumb bastard luck those sensors actually worked perfectly and caught the hull breaking on its last-ever ascent and he just ignored it and took a bunch of people to their stupid unnecessary deaths

>>508919948
Yeah everyone was telling him it was unsuitable, but despite that, i think the carbon fiber in the composite is necessary for it to have a chance at all. A solid reesin hull wouldn't do, or they would have done that.

The main unsuitability is the fatigue that occurs. As ,mpeople have said, it made it down there a few times. But each time it goes down and back up, fibers crack, weakiening it each time. Every trip could have been th last.

A sphere is the optimal shape for distributing pressure, but he wanted a more spacious design. You could no doubt overcome the inherent weakness of a tube design with strong enough materials. There probably is some calculation of how thick it would need to be to work with a titanium tube, but I don't know it. I just think the way it was all joined together was flawed from the start, whereas an entire metal build would be easier to mate the parts together.

Yeah its spheres all the way for me, I wouldn't set foot in anything non-spherical. Need more space, just make it bigger and thicker.

This the newest current deepest diver that has been to the bottom of the mariana trench multiple times, at its core underneatht he shell is a titanium sphere. Its rated "unlimited depth" and will probably be in service for decades. YOu know if this has made it multiple times, its going to be alright many more times. The pressure sphere will last with no problems for a long time. For extreme depth and pressure, the design of it is not to be fucked with, even the hatch and porthole design is such that the deeper it goes, the tighter the seal gets. If it loses power, it automatically drops any weights and rises.

The main problems are two
1. Is that they did not send a 'dummy' sub first. It would actually test if they would survive.
2. They used the same sub that was used for tests as their main sub. They should've built another one. The carbon gets destroyed with every dive. It's like having a brand new car for test drive and then sell the same testing car straight to market, makes no sense.

You know what's crazy
The water down there is under so much pressure, it's compressed into a smaller volume, compressed by about 2%. So when the Titan gave out, the water was not being pushed in by gravity, it was literally exploding into the chamber.

Probably missed some things but basically it's just a DIY job that Stockton Rush is now Stockton Crush.

Not to mention the literal off the shelf parts like a camping light, a plastic box and computer fan for carbon capture, a plastic box as a toilet etc..

Also Carbon fibre has been tested before and went down further than Oceangate did. However they did it properly and heavily analysed it after every dive looking for structural change. It was decommissioned as it had a short life span.

No, it doesn't, actually. When properly designed it has indefinite fatigue life like steel. You can make a sub out of carbon fiber, the USN had a tech demonstrator made out of CFRP for a while.

This shit however, was very far from properly designed, and operated by complete retards.

Stockton must've listened to this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjwkXYB4nHs

But yes it's absolutely nuts that they sanded the carbon fiber layers. Even Stockton with expertise in aero, he must have known better. But they were paying huge $$$ for the carbon fiber assembly and pressured to just sand it down and go with it.

The proper way I gather is even more $$$$, requires huge a vacuum oven. Probably out of their budget. And probably one reason people use steel or titanium - ends up being cheaper once they consider the high expense in proper manufacture of carbon fiber.

The naval listening buoys heard the bang not long after they went down. So no, they did not survive 3 days. Anon was indicating how the media hyped up a rescue when the navy/coast guard was well aware of the bang which indicated the implosion. They have enough sounding buoys they can triangulate the approximate location, similar to earth quakes. They knew they were goners hours after they launched, but yet allowed the media to run with it. It should make you think.

This should should've been a test sub to build the 'real one' ,then they should've done test with the final sub model while building a second one that is 1:1 similar to the final test sub. Then dive.

The 5 layer process was also guess work, assuming that the 5 layers would be equivalent of one solid 5 inch thick hull. Nobody had any data on that. The first layer is already cured when the second layer is being applied, with an adhesive between, then cured again , then same for each layer, so the 1st layer has been through the vaccuum oven 5 times. Did the next layer shrinking onto an already cured layer even properly bind with the glue sheet inbetween? In the wreckage you can see what looks like separated layers

What they shoulda done, like someone else has mentioned, is test it repeatedly to destruction and see how many pressure cycles it took to fail, then say about half of that is its safe usable lifetime and replace it whenever you get to that amount of dives. But it would have cost too much, so he decided not to bother, thats it. It was always going to fail at some point, and they had no idea how many trips it would last, they were relying on some sensors to tell them if it was cracking, but that was bullshit. It was basically russian roulette. I guess we know now about how many times is safe I guess.

Having in mind how cheap was the sub built with its many flaws I don't think it can be taken as an example for how much such a model can last. I can assure you that if you had a crew/company whatever building a proper sub in similar style would probably have succeeded. Proper test divings, proper test on the electronics, endurance of the sub etc, having back up plans etc. The whole thing was a scam. You can see Stocktons face in the university pressure labs listening to his test hulls exploding at 3000M when he knew he had to get to 4100M. The look of pure dispare as he pulls the test hull out of the tube is a clear indicator he knew he fucked up and had made his decisions to just die with his ideas.

Years in a millions of dollars into thr project he knew it was over. He knew he wasn't going to be making any money. His whole business model was retarded and his engineering project was ticking time bomb. PH Nargolet, who became his best friend, also knew what was going on and was just as suicidal as Stockton about the idea. He even went as far as to say multiple times "I've had a good life"

These expeditions were Russian roulette missions only Stockton never wanted to stop spinning the barrel. He wanted to die quickly and painlessly in the ocean taking others with him.

You dont have 15 engineers and 100 industry experts tell you this is going fail please dont do this and then skirt around as many laws as you can without having a death wish. He had a clear deathwish.

They were already using a solid 5 inch hull on the first version the cyclops. That got cracked by fucking lightning and then they basically took off the end domes and rings and made a new cylinder, making the titan out of the same rings. This second version of the hull was done differently in 5x1 inch layers, that they assumed would work the same but that wasn't thoroughly tested.
