It's crazy to see people deny what an impact DS1 had. Yeah, king's field existed. Yes, there were hardcore Amiga/commodore text RPGs. They were for nerds and grognards.
This entire genre went from the "core" market of people who played DMC, ninja gaiden, Monhun, and the like to mass casual appeal overnight because of the PREPARE TO DIE marketing. /v/ has the memory of a goldfish sometimes I swear to fuck. Living through the transitions from
>Hobbyist magazines and BBS forums
to
>techTV and gamefaqs
to
>G4 and gamespot taking over
to
>youtube and social media (r*ddit too)
You see the same shit over and over again but with a different coat of paint. DS1 was the watershed moment for all of those 12 year olds, anon, but it also pulled in a lot of people who had barely even engaged with shit like OOT. /v/ is, despite being shit at games, still part of the "core" audience and was already familiar with the systems in place for DS1. Jim, who had only played halo, CoD, and maybe god of war 2 was new to this type of game. There were a lot of Jims, mostly due to word of mouth/viral clips of people raging about how hard this game was.
