It's a versatile enough regiment that you can include almost anything in it - the 4th edition codex gave them abhuman access and said they preferred heavy bolters and grenade launchers, but their art and fiction has them with all kinds of stuff.
The biggest thing is they're a mechanized regiment, and my rule has always been that everything has to be mounted in some fashion to count as truly Steel Legion. Flavorwise 4-6 squads in transports backed up by other vehicles or fast units like sentinels is their jam.
Metawise the plasmagun has always been the best option for them. The regiment rules have pretty much always given some kind of buff to dismounted infantry that benefits the plasma more than anything else they could hop out with.
