Oh, the Addisons are supposed to be these guys because they're used as swag for job fairs or businesses advertising. That makes so much sense. I always imagined Spamton as a particularly advertisement little mascot for an email client. Sort of like a desktop buddy, but as time went on he quickly became obsoleted and people instinctively associated him with dangerous spam mail, leading to him being avoided at all cost.
